Germany Opportunity Card 2026 guide covering eligibility, points system, financial requirements, documents and application process.

Germany Opportunity Card 2026 is an important immigration option for qualified professionals from outside the European Union who want to travel to Germany and look for suitable employment. Unlike many traditional work visa routes, the Opportunity Card can allow eligible applicants to enter Germany for job searching even when they do not yet have a specific job offer.

The Opportunity Card, known in German as the Chancenkarte, was introduced to make it easier for qualified international workers to enter Germany and search for employment. Applicants can qualify either as recognised skilled workers or through a points-based system.

If you are exploring different German visa options, start with our comprehensive Germany Visa Guide 2026.

What Is the Germany Opportunity Card?

The Germany Opportunity Card is a residence route that allows eligible third-country nationals to enter Germany for the purpose of looking for suitable employment.

It is particularly useful for qualified professionals who do not yet have a German job offer but want to search for qualified employment directly in Germany.

The Opportunity Card can initially be issued for up to one year. During the job-search period, holders can also undertake limited employment and job trials under the applicable rules.

Who Can Apply for the Germany Opportunity Card 2026?

There are two main ways to qualify for the Opportunity Card.

Option 1: Recognised Skilled Worker

Applicants may qualify directly if they have a foreign vocational or academic qualification that is fully recognised in Germany.

Applicants who completed an academic degree or vocational qualification in Germany may also qualify as skilled workers.

Under this route, applicants do not need to go through the points system.

Option 2: Points-Based Opportunity Card

Applicants whose foreign qualification is not fully recognised in Germany may qualify through the points system.

For this route, applicants generally need a qualifying foreign academic or vocational qualification, the required language skills and at least six points.

Germany Opportunity Card Eligibility Requirements 2026

The eligibility requirements depend on which route you use.

Basic Qualification

For the points-based route, you generally need a recognised foreign university degree or a state-recognised vocational qualification. A non-academic vocational qualification generally needs to have involved at least two years of training.

Language Requirement

Applicants using the points route generally need German language skills of at least A1 level or English language skills of at least B2 level.

German language skills can provide additional points and may also improve your chances of finding employment in Germany.

Financial Requirement

You must be able to support yourself financially during your stay in Germany.

For 2026, the general financial requirement is €1,091 net per month. This can generally be demonstrated through a blocked bank account or a Declaration of Commitment.

For more information about the wider financial requirements for German visas, see our Germany Visa Bank Statement Requirements 2026 guide.

Germany Opportunity Card Points System 2026

The points system applies when you do not qualify directly as a recognised skilled worker.

You generally need a minimum of 6 points to qualify through this route.

Points for Partial Recognition of Qualification

If your foreign qualification has been assessed in Germany and found to be partially equivalent, you can receive 4 points.

Points for Shortage Occupations

If your formal qualification is in a recognised shortage occupation, you can receive 1 point.

Points for Professional Experience

Relevant professional experience can provide additional points.

  • 2 points for at least two years of relevant professional experience within the previous five years.
  • 3 points for at least five years of relevant professional experience within the previous seven years.

Points for German Language Skills

German language skills can provide additional points depending on your level.

  • A2 German: 1 point
  • B1 German: 2 points
  • B2 or higher German: 3 points

English at C1 level or higher can provide an additional point where the applicable conditions are met.

Points for Age

Age can also contribute to the points score.

  • Under 35 years: 2 points
  • Age 35 to 39: 1 point

Points for Previous Residence in Germany

You can receive 1 point if you can prove that you legally and continuously lived in Germany for at least six months during the previous five years. Tourist visits do not normally count.

Points for a Qualifying Spouse or Partner

You can receive 1 point if your spouse or life partner also meets the applicable requirements for an Opportunity Card.

Germany Opportunity Card Points Calculator

Calculating your points before applying is an important step because applicants using the points route generally need at least six points.

You should collect evidence for every point you claim, including qualification documents, professional experience certificates, language certificates, age information and evidence of previous residence in Germany where applicable.

For a detailed explanation of how the points system works, read our Germany Opportunity Card Points Calculator Guide 2026.

Germany Opportunity Card Financial Requirements 2026

Financial security is a mandatory part of the Opportunity Card application.

In 2026, applicants generally need to demonstrate access to at least €1,091 net per month for their stay.

For a one-year stay, the amount required in a blocked account can therefore be approximately €13,092, subject to the applicable calculation and official requirements at the time of application.

A Declaration of Commitment can also be used where accepted.

If you already have an eligible part-time employment contract in Germany, the income may be considered when assessing your financial security. If the net income is below €1,091 per month, the difference may generally be covered through other permitted financial evidence.

Can You Apply for an Opportunity Card Without a Job Offer?

Yes. One of the main advantages of the Opportunity Card is that eligible applicants can use it to travel to Germany to search for employment without already having a specific qualified job offer.

However, applicants must still meet the relevant qualification, language, points and financial requirements depending on their route.

If you already have a qualified job offer, you may instead be able to use a direct employment route such as a skilled-worker visa or EU Blue Card.

Opportunity Card vs Germany Work Visa

The main difference is that the Opportunity Card is primarily designed for job searching, while a work visa or residence permit is generally based on a specific employment situation.

If you already have a qualifying employment offer, you should compare the available employment routes before choosing the Opportunity Card.

For a broader employment immigration overview, read Germany Work Visa 2026: Requirements, Eligibility, Documents & Application Process.

Opportunity Card vs Germany Skilled Worker Visa

The Skilled Worker route is generally suitable for applicants who already have qualifying employment and meet the applicable qualification requirements.

The Opportunity Card is more focused on allowing eligible applicants to enter Germany and search for employment.

Read our Germany Skilled Worker Visa 2026 guide to compare the requirements.

Opportunity Card vs Germany EU Blue Card

The EU Blue Card is designed for highly qualified professionals who already have a qualifying employment offer and meet the applicable salary and qualification requirements.

The Opportunity Card, by contrast, can be used by eligible applicants to search for employment in Germany.

Read Germany EU Blue Card 2026 for the salary and eligibility requirements.

Germany Opportunity Card and Job Seeker Options

The Opportunity Card provides a modern route for eligible foreign professionals who want to search for work in Germany.

Applicants should compare it with other job-search routes before making a decision.

See our Germany Job Seeker Visa 2026 guide for more information.

How Long Is the Germany Opportunity Card Valid?

The Opportunity Card is generally issued initially for a maximum period of one year.

During this period, the holder can search for suitable employment in Germany.

If the applicant finds qualifying employment, they can apply for the appropriate residence permit for employment.

Under certain circumstances, an extension of the Opportunity Card may be possible for up to two additional years when the requirements for another employment residence title are not met but an offer of qualified employment exists.

Can You Work in Germany With an Opportunity Card?

Yes. Opportunity Card holders are permitted to undertake part-time employment of up to 20 hours per week while searching for suitable employment.

This can make it easier to gain practical experience and help support living expenses while looking for a qualified position.

Job trials are also permitted for up to two weeks per employer under the applicable conditions.

Can Opportunity Card Holders Work Full-Time?

The Opportunity Card itself does not generally provide unrestricted full-time employment rights.

During the job-search period, holders can generally work up to 20 hours per week in secondary employment.

Once you obtain qualifying employment, you can apply for the appropriate residence permit for employment.

What Happens After Finding a Job?

Once you find suitable employment, you may be able to switch from the Opportunity Card to another residence permit depending on your job, qualification and circumstances.

Possible routes can include a Skilled Worker residence permit, EU Blue Card or another appropriate employment residence title.
